For years I had put up with what I now know to be haemorrhoids. Gradually worsening and scary symptoms finally made go to the GP. The GP thought it was piles but wanted to refer me to a specialist. After considering NHS waiting lists I asked if I could be referred to go privately and found Mr Sumrien on a self funded basis at the Spire, Bristol who diagnosed cat 3 and 4 piles and recommended THD and mucopexy. I have always been petrified of any medical procedure and having a lifelong passion for sport, fitness and healthy (except ale and red wine) diet have only consulted medical professionals when absolutely necessary. Mr. Sumrien gave me the confidence to have the procedure done, explaining concisely in a non-patronising way what it entailed. Importantly, he was upfront about the initial pain levels, post operative recovery stages and how this would be managed with a range of timeline scenarios depending on the individual. So, today is six weeks since my surgery and I am basically back to a new normal where my rear end now no longer runs my life and have just been “signed off” after my 6 week follow up appointment. The early post operative pain and associated bowel movement scenarios were much in line with Mr. Sumrien’s advise although I do think I was at the lower end of the scale in terms of pain severity. I was given two weeks supply of painkillers, paracetamol and a stronger codeine phosphate. I used the paracetamol for about a week but took no codeine. In addition I was given a five day antibiotic course with strict instructions for how to take them and a supply of local anesthetic Instillagel (not used) The pain was mainly gone after two weeks replaced by a little irritation and after three weeks I was able to begin to start building back the fitness I had lost due to lack of exercise. I’m gentle jogging/fast walking 5-6 k most days now and aim to ramp this up soon. If you are thinking about sorting out your piles…..DO IT!! Stop scaring yourself on google and consult Mr. Sumrien. Yes, after the surgery the first few days will be challenging but you will be dealt with in a highly professional manner with total support, empathy and importantly extreme skill. I feel like a new person and cannot recommend him highly enough.

I am currently recovering from a Hernia Operation which Mr Sumrien performed on 3rd March in Bristol. I’m extremely pleased with the operation performed and my recovery progress so far (5 days later). I would like to thank Mr Sumrien and his team for their work. Before the surgery, I was somewhat anxious about what was required (I’m a compete needle-phobic) however Mr Sumrien took the time to explain my problem and how it would be repaired as well as the risks involved. In reality, the procedure was very quick, I had no adverse effects from the general anaesthetic, no real pain and only very minor discomfort. I was able to move around my room unaided following the operation (handy for the loo) and have found that the pain killer medication has hardly been required. All-in-all my experience was very positive and I would definitely recommend Mr Sumrien to anyone seeking top quality great care.

I had been suffering from piles/haemorrhoids for over 20 years and no GP advised me properly until I decided to do some research myself and asked my GP to be seen by a specialist. I chose Dr Sumrien, based on previous reviews and was not disappointed. When we first met, I immediately knew that I could trust him. He examined me and thoroughly explained what I was suffering from and what could be done. In my case, surgery under general anaesthesia was the only option as some skin tags needed to be removed too. He warned me that it would be painful for some time but will improve my quality of life in the long run. I appreciated his honesty and surgery went ahead. The care I received was amazing and after being given the green light by Dr Sumrien, I was able to go home in the evening. He had reinforced that the next days would be challenging so pain didn’t come as a surprised yet I managed with Paracetamol and avoided Codeine. In my personal situation, it took about 3 weeks for the pain to disappear however I was able to stop the painkillers after 10 days. Being a healthy and sporty person, I tried to walk every day and managed to go back into running (slow sensible pace to start with) after 5 weeks. I had my follow-up appointment after six weeks and Dr Sumrien was extremely pleased with the outcome. I must say that I am too! Being in pain for some days was worth it so if you have to have the same kind of intervention, I want to encourage you to think long-term and to fully trust Dr Sumrien. His knowledge, professionalism, care, kindness as well as the fact that he has the well-being of his patients at heart, made this whole journey a good one and I am very grateful and thankful for that.

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2018 and Haytham Sumrien was my consultant. He performed the long operation to remove my cancer and also supervised my treatment. I believe that Haytham always had my best interests at heart and went out of his way on my behalf several times. I noticed that all the staff at Southmead Hospital clearly hold him in high esteem.

Have had 2 operations carried out by Mr Sumrien. He has a great bedside manner that totally put me at ease. Both operations were successful and I highly recommend him. I wouldn't have anyone else looking after me
